You’ve felt the sorrow and guilt of Sonny as he deals with Mr. Bykovski’s death in the mine. You’ve witnessed Sonny’s broken heart, his stupid choice to deal with it and his frustration about not being able to take the Calculus class he fought for. Discuss what happens in the next chapter.

Parents, we’d love for you to take a look at our blog opinions regarding space travel expenditures. Any additional ideas, thoughts, or facts to help us ponder? This is a difficult and complex issue. I’m proud of the students for sharing their personal opinions. I know we have some aerospace engineers out there. We also have some very conscietious ecologists and humanitarians. Your insights would give us more to consider. Thanks for sharing!

We’ve just learned about what NASA has planned for the future in space travel & exploration. Some people believe the government spends too much money on the space program. They think this money would be better spent to solve important problems such as crime and poverty. What do you think? Do you agree or disagree? You can even do some personal research to help you formulate your opinions. There isn’t a right or a wrong answer.
Let’s try to get this blog interactive with responding to each other’s thoughts.
1. Remember to always be respectful, even if you disagree.
2. Make sure and identify who you are responding to (nickname use).
3. Give your reasons why you agree or disagree.
4. Share new information that might give others insight.
I’m really curious what you all think. HAVE FUN!!

WOW! Who said snow should cancel rocket launches?!
We didn’t let it stop us!
You’ve had the opportunity to launch two paper rockets with the same 50psi of air pressure. Your first rocket gave you clues as to the changes you might need to make for your second one. This is like what Sonny and his Rocket Boys did with their rockets. If we had multiple opportunities to launch, you could change just one element, relaunch, take notes to develop a “body of knowledge,” and continue, each time making just one adjustment. We didn’t have that luxury. So instead, we launched, looked at those three rockets that went the furthest, and came inside to redesign our rockets based on that information. Then we went back outside to relaunch and see if our second attempt was better than our first.
Now I want you to reflect on the changes from your first to your second rocket. Focus on what happened in the launch and hypothesize why. Looking forward to reading your insights : )

Hey Class,
Wasn’t that a BLAST having Steve with us today!!!
Now, I want you to blog about your experiences today. Think about what you learned about Newton’s Laws (1 and 3). Write how the experiments we did, illustrated those laws. Try to write different ideas and thoughts than the previous entries. I will work really hard to publish your entries quickly so you can see your classmates’ posts. It’s no fun to read 21 of the same ideas!
Don’t forget to bring your rocket back tomorrow: decorated, named and ready to shoot. Remind your parents we will be firing just after 11:00 by the Kindergarten playground, if they want to watch!

GREAT JOB on the specific comments to your classmate’s Sputnik impressions! You guys catch on fast! : )
Now, let’s try something new. Take a look at Steve Spangler’s site (on my web page or stevespangler.com) and read a few of the student’s blog entries from Wilder Elementary. They are 4th graders and have not read the book October Sky, but they watched the movie and then built paper rockets. Reply to one of the entries on their site. It might be cool to interact with another school, eh? Don’t forget to use your nicknames.

Most of us have had our first blog experience. So what do you think? You have posted your impressions of Sputnik as though you were an observer in 1957.
Part of blogging is interacting. Now, make at least one comment on someone’s entry from our class. BE SPECIFIC!! Make sure you site who you are responding to, like Giggles did. : )
I’m proud of you all!
